Odd Fellows recognized the need for a woman’s touch and her helpfulness in carrying out the principles of Odd Fellowship and so the degree of Rebekah written by Schuyler Colfax (a former Vice President of the United States) in 1851. As with the Odd Fellow degrees and teachings, the Rebekah degree teaches invaluable lessons – from the Old Testament of the women of the bible Rebekah; mother of Samson; Hannah, Deborah; Esther; Ruth; Naomi – and the emblems of the beehive representing industry and the result of united efforts; the moon and seven starts emblematic of the value of regularity in our work; the dove – a beautiful emblem of peace; the white lily representative of purity.
